What Materials Are Used For My Jewellery?

All of our Prairie Keepsake jewellery is made using 3A quality 925 Sterling Silver Plated in 14k Gold. We do offer custom solid 14k and 18k gold jewellery at your request. The price reflects the current cost of solid gold.

All gemstones in our gold plated options are lab created cabochans but we do offer genuine gemstones for our solid gold jewellery options (the price will reflect the current cost of requested gemstone ie. diamonds etc).

Our gold plated jewellery will not turn your skin green or tarnish as it does not include oxidizing materials. However, care instructions must be followed to ensure flaking of the gold plating does not occur. Flaking could allow the sterling silver to tarnish if exposed to air or chemicals.

What is Used To Hold My Keepsake?

We use a 3A quality two part resin and hardener that is both water and alcohol resistant once cured in all of our jewellery pieces. We also use a quality UV Resin for securing inclusions before adding the final top coat of the 3A resin and hardener.

Resin is the “glue” that holds your keepsake within your jewellery piece.

Resin is prone to yellowing with continued UV exposure, chemical / water exposure and daily wear. We add white resin tint to all of our breastmilk jewellery pieces to mitigate future yellowing.

Chipping or scratching of the resin may occur with daily wear. Please follow our detailed care instructions to ensure the longevity of your resin.

How is My Breast Milk Preserved?

Once your breast milk arrives it is stored in our freezer until it is ready to be processed into a powder. We use a special boiling method along with 5 natural ingredients to remove bacteria and preserve your breastmilk into a powder. The powder is then ground up and ready to be added to your jewellery piece using our 3A resin / hardener mixture as the “glue”.

Other methods such as constarch and modge podge preservation leave your breastmilk susceptible to decomposition due to the fact that bacteria is not killed first.

Our method ensures the longevity of not only your keepsake but your breastmilk powder so that it can be kept and used for future pieces.

What Is Your Current Turn Around Time?

Our current turn around time for keepsakes is 8 weeks from the date of your keepsake arrival to us - not your order date.

This allows us time to order your jewellery from our ring smith, receive your keepsake, preserve your keepsake, allow it to dry out, and allows ample time for your keepsake to cure properly.

This also ensures that there is no back log in orders as high volume order times (Mother’s Day, Christmas etc) see numerous orders on one day.

I am a critical care nurse and a mom to a busy toddler so our turn around time also reflects the time I have left after working my regular 9-5 job.

If you have a special date that you need a keepsake for there is a rush charge that you can pay for to ensure it for that date - just message us!

How do I care for my keepsake and increase longevity?

Resin Keepsake Jewellery should be viewed as heirloom jewellery and treated as such. Daily wear is not advised as this will cause damage over time to the resin (glue) that holds your keepsake in your jewellery.

  • Daily wear could result in required small repairs to your jewellery over time. The responsibility of the expense of repairs will fall on the customer as care instructions are gone over thoroughly in your confirmation email after purchase, here on our website, and in your package that is shipped to you.

Care instructions as well as our repair policies and warranties are discussed in detail under the Care Instructions tab. Please click the button below to find out more.
